Backend Engineer

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

We’re looking for backend engineers who will be tasked with creating scalable architecture, intricate features, algorithms, systems, and applications that power our systems with the following skill sets, experience, and passions

Job Responsibilities

• Develop features and improvements to Etaily’s product in a secure, well-tested, and performant way.
• Collaborate with Product Management and other stakeholders within Engineering (Frontend, UX, etc.) to maintain a high bar for quality in a fast-paced, iterative environment.
• Advocate for improvements to product quality, security, and performance.
• Solve technical problems of moderate scope and complexity.
• Craft code that meets our internal standards for style, maintainability, and best practices for a high-scale web environment.
• Conduct Code Review within our Code Review Guidelines and ensure community contributions receive a swift response.
• Recognize impediments to our efficiency as a team ("technical debt"), propose and implement solutions.
• Represent Etaily and its values in public communication around specific projects and community contributions..
• Confidently ship small features and improvements with minimal guidance and support from other team members. Collaborate with the team on larger projects.

Your profile

After earning your outstanding degree at a top university, you have gained work experience in a top-tier e-commerce player, consulting companies and/or in start-ups. Moreover, you have a proven track record of personal, academic and professional achievements. Your knowledge of the internet and e-commerce sector in the region is impressive as well as your high drive and ambition to perform. Independence, flexibility and speed are as important to you as geographical mobility and international experience. Entrepreneurial drive, sales attitude and the ability to achieve goals in a fast-paced environment complete your profile. The ideal candidate must possess expertise in brand management, e-commerce operations, marketplace operations, marketing, omni-channel strategy. You must be a logical thinker, problem solver, personable, and with initiative. The role would require a combination of consulting, business development, account management, and financial skills.

Key Qualifications

• Ability to learn quickly on the go. We're looking for software engineers who thrive while learning new technologies.
• Good, if not great, programming skills with: PHP, JavaScript (Ajax & JQuery), and an ability to pick up new ones, hint: Node.js.
• Exemplary experience planning, structuring and working with relational databases.
• Ability to use MySQL proficiently, let’s see less “left joins”.
• Understanding of large-scale distributed systems in practice, including multi-tier architectures, application security, monitoring and storage systems.
• A strong portfolio of products or services built will be an added advantage.
• Worked with and in the AWS environment and ability to deploy products in Ubuntu > 18.04.
• Ability to work in a cross-functional team which touches many parts of core systems at Etaily.
